We offer a full range of classes for everyone from beginners to experienced fusers who want to increase their repertoire.

Introduction to Fusing

This is a hands-on class. No prior experience with glass is necessary. Students will complete several projects (such as a jewelry piece, nightlight, picture frame, bowl and kiln-carving) during the four-week course and learn techniques in fusing and slumping glass. Detailed documentation is included for each student to take home. Glass and firings are included in the class fee and tools are supplied. Closed toe shoes are required. Come prepared to have a good time, glass fusing is fun.

Intermediate Fusing

Take your glass fusing skills to the next level! Construct a basic pattern bar, fire up a torch to create your own hand-pulled stringers and twist glass over a flame to make unique design elements. Begin to explore the uses for frit and powdered glass. Learn how to use a murrine maker to add multi-colored dots to your bag-of-tricks! Materials and tools are provided, closed toe shoes are required.

Big Bowl

You have seen the big and beautiful fused glass bowls in galleries that sell for hundreds of dollars. We will teach you how to design your big bowl and show you what pitfalls to avoid. This class is limited to no more than five students. Class fee includes up to 3 firings, use of tools, supplies and a glass allowance.

Giftmaker's Workshop

This year you can get an early start on the holidays with this fun-filled glass fusing class. It is a great way of getting into the holiday spirit while making your own hand-made gifts and ornaments. You can complete 6 to 10 projects, such as picture frames, key fobs, nightlights, holiday pins and ornaments, wiping out most of your gift list! We provide patterns, instructions, tools, supplies, refreshments and a fun environment.

Pattern Bars and Pot Melts

In this advanced class you will learn to make Slump Pattern Bars, Combings and Pot Melts. These techniques produce beautiful components that have an organic quality and can be used to create complex and beautiful pieces. Each student will complete a 4" x 12" final project that can be slumped or left flat. Coldworking and finishing will be discussed and students will receive beginning instruction on the use of a sandblaster and tile saw. Firing schedules will be provided.

Plate Making I

In this introduction to plate making you will make four medium size fused and slumped plates. These plates will all be very different in shape and design in order to introduce you to the many techniques available for slumping and fusing. This class will introduce you to cutting circles, full fusing, tack fusing, and mold making techniques. Discussion of basic firing characteristics and design theory will be covered along with demonstrations and hands-on workshop activity.

Dichroic Jewelry

"Demystify" beautiful dichroic glass and how to work with it. We will teach you the best ways to get the most from the glass. Some of the techniques taught are etching, inclusions, decals, and cabochons. Students will learn how to finish their pieces and create beautiful and unique jewelry. Class fee includes all materials, supplies, findings and firings. Tools will be provided.

Plate Making II

Start working larger in this class. You will make 4 larger plates – up to 12” square, and up to 11” round. Using a variety of tools and stencils, you will use powders and frit to create your own patterned and textured glass, which you will cut and combine with sheet glass to make your plates. Make a set, or make four unique gifts. Learn how to give your work a finished appearance without the use of expensive equipment. Class fee includes glass and firings. Tools will be provided. Students will need to provide a P100 rated respirator. Closed toe shoes are required.

Kiln Cast Objects

Create several kiln-cast objects using frit, stringer and sheet glass. Make one geometric shape, such as a pyramid or half sphere which can be used as a decorative ornament or as the base for a larger work. For your second object, use one of the figurative molds, such as a shell, butterfly, cross, etc. Metal inclusions, leftover pieces of pattern bars, combings, or small Freeze and Fuse objects can all be used in these projects. Learn how to sand-blast and cold-work your glass to give your objects a personalized look. Specialized firing and annealing schedules will be discussed.

Drapes & Drops

Experiment with the effects of gravity on glass to create graceful one-of-a-kind slumps for your art! Each student will take home four to six finished pieces. Several will be draped over forms which allow gravity to pull the glass into a fluted shape. The others will drop through open molds and students will monitor the drop by peeking in the kiln during the process! Monitoring will take place during the second and third class sessions, so everyone will have a chance to peek into a hot kiln! Class fee includes glass and firings. Tools will be provided. Closed toe shoes are required. Only cotton clothing must be worn for the second and third sessions – man-made fibers melt!

Parallel Lines

Discover the possibilities of strip construction. Put together pieces with crisp thin lines of color for a precise modern look. Learn how easy it is to create parallel lines and improve your cutting skills at the same time. Explore several ways to use the stripes you create as components and as a finished piece. Two of your three finished pieces will have straight lines, while the third will introduce curves! Embrace the chance to impose some order in your life – or at least your glass! Class fee includes glass and firings. Tools will be provided. Closed toe shoes are required.

Soup & Salad

Create a special soup and salad place setting for a special someone in your life, or indulge yourself with beautiful handmade art glass. You will make a bowl suitable for soup or ice cream, and a companion plate just right for a salad, sandwich, or cake. Make a special occasion set to honor a birthday, or a fun and functional set to enjoy every day! Class fee includes glass and firings. Tools will be provided. Closed toe shoes are required.

Birdbath Workshop

Make a truly spectacular gift for the birdwatcher in your life (or for yourself) with our birdbath workshop. You will use fiber paper to create a relief design on the bottom and sides of a 15” bowl in a transparent color. Of course, you don’t have to use this as a birdbath! Bring ideas and sketches for the image you would like to create, or use our many design books for inspiration. Choose between two different styles of wrought iron stands for display – one has a stake for installation in the ground, the other can be used on a tabletop or deck. The workshop fee covers all tools, materials and firings, including the stand. Space is limited – please call for reservations. Demonstration and instruction is covered during the first hour then you have the rest of the day to complete your piece working at your own pace. Feel free to bring a lunch – the studio has a refrigerator and a microwave.

Freeze & Fuse Workshop

Freeze and fuse can be used to make beautiful components or stand alone pieces using glass powders, water, a freezer, and a kiln. We will show you controlled color placement, layering and how to mix a custom color. Learn how easy it is to make dimensional jewelry or add depth to your fused projects. Small items can be added to scrapbook pages or glued to the front of photo albums or address books. Use flexible molds to create up to twelve pieces during this fast-paced workshop. If you have any candy molds or polymer clay molds you would like to use, you may bring them with you, but we will have many molds here for you to use. This is an amazing technique you will be glad to know!

Go with the Flow

Spend an hour during the first class just choosing the colors you want to use, then loading them into the kiln on wire mesh or in a wire basket. Let the kiln perform magic as the glass melts through the mesh and creates many flowing designs. During the second class you will have three hours to plan and complete a six inch project and cut the remaining pieces of your melt for jewelry. Each piece has unique and irreproducible patterns, forcing you to “go with the flow!”

Fused Glass Crosses

Learn how to create your own beautiful fused glass crosses. Explore different methods of solid construction. You will be taught different techniques to embellish your crosses, including sandblasting, carving, and micas. Create different sizes to be used as jewelry or displayed on a table or a wall. These make great gifts. Class fee includes materials and firing. Tools will be provided. Closed toe shoes are required.

Jewelry Making II - Dichroic & Beyond

By popular demand, this class will build on and go beyond our dichroic jewelry class! We will stack fire dichro, allowing you to add depth to your pieces. Create a stretch bracelet and earrings combining your glass with semi-precious stones or metal. Combine dichro and the aventurine colors for added sparkle! Use mica for more subtle shimmer in your pendants. Class fee includes all materials, supplies, findings and firings. Tools will be provided. Closed toe shoes are required.
